Reps. Grijalva, Schakowsky, García Calls for State Department to Support Indigenous Human Rights Leaders in Guatemala
WASHINGTON – Today, Representatives Raúl M. Grijalva (AZ-03), Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) and Jesús “Chuy” García (IL-04) led 14 Members of Congress calling on the Department of State to support Indigenous human rights leaders in Guatemala, including Sofia Tot Ac.
Sofia Tot Ac is an Indigenous Poqomchi and Q’eqchi’ leader in the municipality of Purulha, department of Baja Verapaz, Guatemala. She holds numerous important leadership positions in the region. On June 19, 2022, Tot Ac was arrested and charged with aggravated theft and aggravated usurpation of protected areas. Human rights organizations working in the region believe these charges are fraudulent and are meant to terrorize Tot Ac and other human rights defenders.
As a result of these events, the signers of the letter call on the State Department to “condemn the arrest of Sofia Tot Ac and request the following action from the State Department:
- An investigation into the charges against Sofia Tot Ac;
- An investigation into what extent the U.S. has provided funds or training to the police, prosecutors, and judges involved in her case;
- We request State Department representatives be present at Sofia Tot Ac’s upcoming hearings;
- We request that [the State Department] inform us to what extent U.S. government funds, equipment, training, and/or other support has gone to the Purulha military outpost and hydroelectric dam projects in Purulha, Baja Verapaz.
“The government is trying to intimidate human rights defenders so that we will be quiet,” said Sofia Tot Ac.” But I will not be silent while my indigenous brothers and sisters are starving from having their land stolen by foreign companies.”
Tot Ac’s hearing was postponed from Thursday, October 6, 2022 to another date.

Los Congresistas Grijalva, Schakowsky y García instan al Departamento de Estado que apoye a los líderes indígenas de derechos humanos en Guatemala
WASHINGTON – Hoy, los Congresistas Raúl M. Grijalva (AZ-03), Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) y Jesús G. “Chuy” García (IL-04) encabezaron a 14 miembros del Congreso para instar al Departamento de Estado que apoye a los líderes indígenas de derechos humanos en Guatemala, incluida a Sofia Tot Ac.
Sofia Tot Ac es una líder indígena Poqomchi y Q’eqchi’ del municipio de Purulha, departamento de Baja Verapaz, Guatemala. Ella ocupa numerosos puestos de liderazgo importantes en la región. El 19 de junio de 2022, Tot Ac fue detenida y acusada de robo agravado y usurpación de áreas protegidas agravada. Las organizaciones de derechos humanos que trabajan en la región creen que estos cargos son fraudulentos y están destinados a aterrorizar a Tot Ac y otros defensores de los derechos humanos.
Como resultado de estos hechos, los firmantes de la carta hacen un llamado al Departamento de Estado para que “condene el arresto de Sofia Tot Ac y solicitan la siguiente acción del Departamento de Estado:
- Una investigación sobre los cargos contra Sofia Tot Ac;
- Una investigación sobre hasta qué punto EE. UU. ha proporcionado fondos o capacitación a la policía, los fiscales y los jueces involucrados en su caso;
- Solicitamos que los representantes del Departamento de Estado estén presentes en las próximas audiencias de Sofia Tot Ac;
- Solicitamos que [el Departamento de Estado] nos informe hasta qué punto los fondos, equipos, capacitación y/u otro tipo de apoyo del gobierno de los EE. UU. se han destinado al puesto militar de Purulha y a los proyectos de represa hidroeléctrica en Purulha, Baja Verapaz.
“El gobierno está tratando de intimidar a los defensores de los derechos humanos para que estemos callados”, dijo Sofia Tot Ac. “Pero no me quedaré callada mientras mis hermanos y hermanas indígenas se mueren de hambre por el robo de sus tierras por parte de empresas extranjeras”.
La audiencia de Tot Ac fue pospuesta, jueves 6 de octubre de 2022 para otra fecha.
